How to securely track and transport inmates

A top priority for prisons is to keep track of all inmates. Head counts, wrist bands, even RFID technology have all been utilised but with some mixed results. Headcounts leave a huge margin of error as inmates are manually counted, wrist bands are practical but can be torn or misplaced, and RFID is a great but costly option where loss and replacements can really get out of hand. An alternative to these methods would be the use of mobile biometrics; they’re quick to set up, don’t require distribution of additional identification, and are portable to virtually anywhere in a facility.

While it serves a tremendous purpose inside the facility, what about beyond it? Prisoners may leave the premises for specific events or appointments, deaths in the family, or to be transported to another facility. A solution, such as Secure Passenger Transport, enables the administrator of the facility to be able to constantly monitor inmates when they leave and return to the facility, where they anticipate to go, and see where they traveled to. This also increases accountability of the guards during transport to ensure they’re efficient in their duties.

How will this work with inmates as they travel from stop to stop? Whenever the inmate(s) board the vehicle, they authenticate themselves with an onboard device to verify who they are. This also applies to other passengers such as guards, caretakers, and drivers. Once the vehicle is stopped, all passengers that disembark from the vehicle must authenticate themselves with the device once again; it will be repeated however many times until the arrival of the final destination.

Through the use of biometrics on prison transport, it allows the administrators of the facility or contracted transport company to achieve a few things. First, it dramatically increases visibility for the administrators to make sure the right passengers who are authorized to board and disembark are doing so at the pre-approved stops. Second, a detailed report is made available to spot any sudden changes or abnormalities during the transport as reported by the driver. In addition, this would require significantly less capital and need for heavy modifications on vehicles; it is no bigger than a tablet and allows a user to be quickly trained to use it.
