Improving security with biometrics

Identifying who is who in an airport is not a simple task. Not only is it the duty of the airport to manage passengers that come and leave the terminals but also the employees, vendors, and security personnel.

The difficulty lies in providing surveillance to restricted areas and ensuring that all individuals are authorized to be there. Restricted areas must be thoroughly monitored, as they could be utilized for malicious intent such as terrorism, robberies, and trafficking.

One solution is to provide specific agents the ability to verify who is who in these restricted areas by using mobile biometrics. Mobile biometric devices are outfitted with a fingerprint scanner and an RFID card scanner which are linked to a person’s registered profile to authenticate who they are. Should their authentication be denied, then a detention protocol is performed with a report sent to the security control center of the airport.

Another application for mobile biometrics in an airport is passenger or employee shuttle transportation. With this a passenger quickly verifies who they are, when and where they enter and exit the shuttle, and all from a dashboard that updates in real-time for an administrator to view. This will serve a strong purpose for travellers, but it is geared specifically for airport personnel who are shuttled between employee parking to traveller areas, and potentially restricted, security level access only areas. Through the dashboard, an administrator sees when they arrive, what areas they are able to operate in, and an aggregate of all personnel with accessibility for restricted areas.
